Walking in Berwickshire

We might be bias, but we think Berwickshire, located in the Scottish Borders, has some extremely beautiful walks to offer due to its picturesque landscapes. While the “best” walks can be subjective, here are some walks we enjoy in Berwickshire that you might consider if you are looking to get out and about:

St Abbs Head Coastal Path: This coastal walk offers stunning views of the cliffs and the sea. You can explore the nature reserve and spot seabirds along the way. The circular route takes you around St Abbs Head, providing breathtaking scenery.

Southern Upland Way – Berwickshire Section: The Southern Upland Way is a long-distance trail that passes through Berwickshire. The section from Cockburnspath to Lauder offers diverse landscapes, including farmland, woodlands, and hills.

John Muir Way Link – Dunbar to Cockburnspath: Following part of the original John Muir Way (which now terminates in Dunbar), this coastal walk continues along the easterly section of coastline and takes you from Dunbar to Cockburnspath. You’ll enjoy views of sandy beaches, cliffs, and the Sea. The trail is well-signposted, and you can choose the distance based on your preferences.

Leaderfoot Viaduct and River Tweed Walk: Starting near Melrose, this walk takes you along the River Tweed and offers views of the Leaderfoot Viaduct. The route is relatively easy and provides a peaceful riverside experience.

Paxton House Riverside Walk: Located near Berwick-upon-Tweed, Paxton House is surrounded by beautiful grounds. The Riverside Walk takes you along the River Tweed, passing woodlands and open fields. There is also a lovely coffee shop in the stables- but do check its opening times in advance so you aren’t disappointed!

Eildon Hills: The Eildon Hills near Melrose aren’t in Berwickshire, but as they’re relatively close we wanted to include this walk as it offers fantastic panoramic views. There are three hills, and the walk is moderate, making it suitable for various fitness levels.

We would of course suggest that before embarking on any of the walks above you check the local trail conditions, especially if you’re venturing into more remote areas. Also, make sure to respect the natural environment and follow any guidelines or rules in place.

Happy Walking!
