Area Insights
The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is the popular but perfectly tranquil Island off the Northumberland coast. Home to attractions like Lindisfarne Castle, the 2019 garden of the year The Gertrude Jekyll Garden, and St. Aidan’s Winery, the island offers a variety of attractions to inhabitants and visitors alike, not to mention breath taking scenery and endless sea views. During low tide Holy Island gives access to St. Cuthbert’s Island, a smaller island which has a narrower window for visits between tides but is a great spot for bird and seal spotting. Holy Island access is at the mercy of the tides and there are times throughout each 24 hour period during which it is not possible to drive onto or off the Island. Please see link below for official government crossing times.
The Island itself is mostly serviced by the local coastal towns and cities, however the local post office sells basic and essential food and domestic products as well as souvenirs. The Village Hall hosts local events and there are nearby cafes, pubs and restaurants in the village.
The nearest supermarkets can be found in Berwick upon Tweed around 20 minutes away by car, however the major chains will deliver groceries during low tide times too. Local schooling is plentiful with Holy Island and Lowick first school nearby, otherwise Berwick offers various options including the well respected Longridge Towers.
The main visitor attraction, Lindisfarne Castle, abandoned during the reign of Henry VIII, was converted in 1901 into an Arts and Crafts style holiday home for Country Life magazine founder Edward Hudson by architect Sir Edward Lutyens and overlooks the Island’s famous gardens.
Holy Island forms part of the Northumberland Coast Area of Natural Beauty, along which can be found a number of stunning coastal towns and beaches such Goswick, Cheswick, Seahouses and Craster.
